Baltic Fleet Deployments - Wk 26/2022

Weekly Brief

Limited naval activity took place on June 29 and 30th with a task force of four vessels conducting naval and air defense exercises against simulated targets. In total, two Steregushchy class corvettes and two Nanuchka class missile boats were involved.

Naval aviation aircraft trained in their secondary roles in providing air support for ground troops. Up to  Su-24 and Su-30SM aircraft were involved dropping bombs on training ranges at Kaliningrad.

Sovremennyy class destroyer Nastoychivy  made the transfer to Kronstadt towards Baltiysk under tow. The destroyer is expected to dock at Yantar for the completion of its maintenance.

Daily Events

June 27
Several warships of the Russian Navy were observed moored inside the Kronstadt naval base near Saint Petersburg [1]. The vessels observed included two Steregushchy class corvettes, Sovremennyy class destroyer Bespokoynyy, Kilo class submarine Dmitrov, a Lada class submarine and a Tarantul class missile boat.

June 28
Sovremennyy class destroyer Nastoychivy was reported north of Talllinn, Estonia. The vessel is under tow heading towards Baltiysk [2].

June 29
Steregushchy class corvette Soobrazitelny held several missile exercises at the training ranges in the Baltic Sea. The first exercise involved air defense with the corvette launching two missiles against two simulated air targets. The air targets were launched by Steregushchy class corvette Stoiky and Nanuchka class missile boat Passat.
Later during the day the vessel launched two missiles against a floating target located some distance from the vessel. Both missiles reportedly struck the target [3].

Fifteen Su-24 fighter bombers and Su-30SM fighter aircraft of the naval aviation engaged ground targets during a training exercise in the Kaliningrad Region. The pilots conducted 50 sorties spread over 10 tactical exercises. Targets were engaged with 50 to 250kg bombs [4].

Destroyer Nastoychivy is reported west of Kalana and still heading towards Baltiysk [5].

June 30
Nanuchka class missile boats Passat and Liven were reported at sea holding air defense exercises in the vicinity of Capa Taran at the Kaliningrad Region. Both vessels used their AK-630 and AK-176 naval guns against simulated air targets. These targets were fired from land based 2S3 Akatsiya self-propelled artillery guns. Later during the day both ships engaged a floating shield simulating a hostile warship. This target was engaged with naval artillery systems [6].

The destroyer Nastoychivy  was last reported west of Leipaja [7].

July 01
Su-24 and Su-30SM aircraft of the Naval Aviation regiment were active over Kaliningrad as they continue air support exercises. Around 15 aircraft took part in the exercises with a total of 50 bombs between 100 and 500 kilograms being dropped on the training ranges [8].

Training vessel Smolny arrived a Baltiysk for a planned replenishment stop. The vessel is on a training cruise carrying cadets of the Baltic Higher Naval School. The next stop of the vessel is planned to be at Severomorsk [9].

Destroyer Nastoychivy arrived at Baltiysk during the day and will most likely dock at Yantar shipyard in order to complete her maintenance and overhaul [10].
