Weekly Brief

Naval activity remained limited to the Gulf of Gdansk at the beginning of the week and the preparations for the Navy Day parade at Saint Petersburg. Training at Kaliningrad continued with a combat readiness check taking place by the end of the week.

Daily Events

July 12
RMP Kaliningrad issued a navigation warning on 5894.5 KHz at 1853Z which warns of naval training in the Gulf of Gdanks. The training takes place between July 12-17 during the day, 0809Z-1600Z. The center position is reported as 54 44 N 19 23 E with dangers to navigation stretching two nautical miles form this position [1].

The stress resilience of 200 soldiers was tested and monitored at a specialized psychological obstacle course in Kaliningrad. The soldiers have to overcome an obstacle course with burning walls, destroyed infrastructure while the sound of explosions and bullets us being played. The goal is to have the soldiers withstand high neuropsychic stress and act confidently as intended in stressful situations [2].

July 13
Over 2.000 conscripts are training on how to fire their weapons during night time conditions. The training takes place at several shooting ranges and training complexes. In addition, the soldiers also train in covert movement and camouflaging their firing positions [3].

July 14
Around 500 signalmen took part in a training exercise in the Kaliningrad Region which centered on setting up secure satellite communication channels in conditions where a conventional enemy is conducting electronic warfare to jam Russian communications [4].

July 15
About 100 servicemen assigned to reconnaissance units of motorized formations are undergoing parachute training which is to last four months. The training will teach the soldiers to jump in full combat gear from altitudes between 200 to 600 meters [5].

Kashtan class submarine rescue vessel Alexander Pushkin was reported by the Latvian armed forces at six nautical miles from the Latvian coast [6]. There were no open source reports about Russian submarine operations in the Baltic Sea on this day.

July 17
A combat readiness inspection is taking place in Kaliningrad with over 3.000 soldiers and 500 pieces of military equipment involved. The exercise will involve dealing with hostile reconnaissance units, defending against air attacks and movement through contaminated areas [7].

July 18
Fifteen tank crews of an unidentified regiment were involved in a combat exercise at Kaliningrad. the tank crews manned T-72B3M main battle tanks and engaged over 60 stationary and moving targets at distances of up to 1.700 meters [8].

Su-27 pilots trained in air-to-air combat and intercepting high-altitude and high-speed targets over the Kaliningrad Region. Both offensive and defensive tactics were trained at various times of the day [9].
