Daily Events

August 09
Bastion coastal missile defense systems were deployed during an exercise at Kamchatka with the systems performing electronic launches against a simulated hostile surface task force. Several small anti-submarine vessels played the part of the enemy task force [1]. These are presumed to be Grisha class corvettes which have been operating in the Sea of Okhotsk recently.

August 10
The Russian naval vessels at Primorsky Krai are placed in a higher degree of preparedness as tropical storm "Lupit" is expected to arrive soon. Watch teams are strengthened, ships are sealed and damage control means are checked and ready for action when necessary [2].

August 11
The Russian missile tracking vessel Akademik M.A. Lavrentyev is reported in a central position in the Northern Pacific Ocean. The vessel is in position where it can monitor a US Minuteman III test launch from the Vandenberg Space Force Base. Several US and Chinese navy vessels are also deployed across the Pacific in order to monitor the missile [3].

August 14
Steregushchy class corvettes RFS Sovershenny, RFS Gromky and RFS Aldar Tsydenzhapov held an air defense exercise in the Peter the Great Gulf near Vladivostok. All three corvettes left port on August 13 and prepared their crew for emergency battle. The air defense exercise involved detecting, tracking and distributing air targets among the three vessels. The role of attacking aircraft was played by an Il-38 and a Il-38N of the Naval Aviation Regiment.
Both aircraft also took the opportunity to train in laying minefields along the route of the warships [4].
